Volcano Climbing

Enjoy experiential volcano climbing safaris in the Virunga Conservation Area. Mufumbiro Mountains (Virunga Mountain ranges) are part of the chain of volcanic mountains located in East-Central Africa. The Volcanic Mountain ranges/Virunga Massifs comprise 8 volcano mountain ranges with the tallest being Mt. Karisimbi (4507m), Mount Muhabura (4127m), Mount Mikeno (4437m), Mount Gahinga (3474m), Mt. Sabyinyo (3674m), Nyiragongo volcano (3470m), Mount Nyamuragira and Bisoke Volcano. The Mufumbiro Mountains are also better referred to as “Mountains that cook” -this is in consideration of the volcanic tendencies of these volcanic mountain ranges. There are 3 (three) Mufumbiro volcanoes/mountains, and they are located in Uganda. These include Sabyinyo, Muhabura and Bisoke,

Mount Muhabura

Volcano climbing in the Virunga Conservation AreaMt. Muhabura is 4127m and it is the tallest of all the 3 Mufumbiro Volcanic mountains in Uganda. Its name means guide, and it has a cone shape. Trekking to the summits of this volcano takes about 8 hours. While you ascend to the summit, you will enjoy the breathtaking view of other volcanoes, and the surrounding lakes like Lake Edward & George. Other special tourist attractions that you will be clearly viewing at the summits of Mount Muhabura include the Rwenzori Mountain ranges and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Mount Gahinga

Mount Gahinga (3474m) is 6 hour trek to its summits. The word Gahinga is translated to a pile of stones, and this is evident with several volcanic rocks at the base area of this Mufumbiro Mountain. At the top of this Mufumbiro volcano, there is a swampy caldera measuring 180m wide. Mt. Gahinga is found between Mount Sabyinyo and Muhabura.

Mount Karisimbi

Located on the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mount Karisimbi is the highest mountain in the Virunga Massif. The iconic volcano rises up to 4,507 meters above sea level overlooking the other volcanoes in the greater Masif.  The lower slopes of the volcano shelter karisimbi gorilla family which travelers can meet when hiking

Mount Sabyinyo

Sabyinyo volcano is an extinct located west of Lake Bunyonyi and northeast of Lake Kivu. This is rated among the most remarkable Mufumbiro volcanoes given its strategic location in all the 3 Virunga region states; Rwanda, Congo, and Uganda. Mt. Sabyinyo is at an altitude of about 3645m. Hiking through this Mufumbiro volcano can take you approximately 8 hours.
